What Does It Feel Like to Wake Up in the Morning With Purpose?

The alarm buzzed. It was the same sound I’d heard for years. But this morning felt different. When I opened my eyes, I didn’t feel the familiar heaviness pressing down on my chest. For once, I felt…okay. And honestly, that surprised me.

For years, mornings were the hardest. Each day started with the same sinking realization: I wasn’t pregnant, I wasn’t a mom, and I didn’t know if I’d ever be. I’d lie there, replaying every failed cycle, every test, every dashed hope. What was I doing wrong? Why couldn’t I make this work?

Society doesn’t make it easier. Motherhood is treated as the ultimate goal. Without it, it’s easy to feel like you’re missing something, like you’re incomplete.

But here’s what I’ve come to learn: Purpose isn’t tied to one role or one outcome.

That realization didn’t happen overnight. It came slowly—through a lot of trial and error, frustration, and finally, acceptance. After yet another failed round of IVF, I had to ask myself a tough question: What would my life look like if I stopped chasing this one dream?

It wasn’t an easy question, and the answer didn’t come right away. But I started exploring other parts of myself—the parts I’d pushed aside for so long. What made me happy? What gave me a reason to get out of bed, even on the hard days?

At first, the answers were small. Writing. Connecting with others who had similar experiences. Spending time outdoors. Learning to cook meals that felt comforting. These little things didn’t seem like much, but over time, they added up.

I didn’t suddenly feel “healed” or find some grand new purpose that erased the pain. But slowly, mornings became less difficult. Instead of starting my day with thoughts of what I didn’t have, I started focusing on what I could create, how I could show up for myself and others.

Purpose isn’t always big or obvious. Sometimes, it’s just about finding joy in the life you’re living right now.

Waking up with purpose doesn’t mean the grief disappears. It doesn’t mean I don’t think about what could have been. But it does mean I’ve learned to see my life as something worth showing up for, even without the things I once thought I couldn’t live without.

So, what does it feel like to wake up with purpose? It feels like relief. It feels like having something to look forward to. It feels like being okay with where I am, even if it’s not where I thought I’d be.

It’s not easy, and it doesn’t happen all at once. But it’s possible to find your way, even when the path looks different from what you imagined. And that, I think, is worth waking up for.
