A Place to Belong, Even When You Feel Different

As I sit here writing, I’m thinking about a recent dinner with my closest friends. We’ve been a core group of four for almost 20 years, through marriages, moves, and the growth of their families. Among my closest friends, I am the only one who isn’t a mother to human children. I used to feel like an outsider in these moments—conversations about their kids’ back-to-school events, family outings, and daily challenges as parents. For years, it stung not having stories to add, and I felt like I had nothing to contribute.

But recently, something shifted. I sat at that same dinner table, listening and laughing along, and I realized: I didn’t feel like an outsider anymore. I felt completely at peace with my journey and my place in their lives. This acceptance didn’t come easily—it took time, reflection, and the strength to find pride in my story. And I want the same for you.

How to Stay Connected When Your Journey Feels Different

  1. Focus on Your Unique Strengths: Just because your path differs doesn’t make your story any less valuable. I had to learn this firsthand. Even if you’re not talking about kids or school events, you bring depth, experience, and perspective that enriches your relationships. Embrace it.

  2. Build Relationships on Mutual Respect: Friendship doesn’t have to be about shared experiences. True friendship is about showing up for one another. For me, sometimes that meant hosting baby showers instead of attending them because it was my way of being supportive without feeling the ache of absence.

  3. Seek Out New Connections: If you ever feel unsupported, remember there are others out there who understand.

When to Reevaluate Relationships

There are times when maintaining a friendship feels too hard, and that’s okay. I’ve learned that friendships, like all relationships, may change. Sometimes, it’s best to love people from a distance if staying connected doesn’t serve you or them. If you feel left out or don’t feel connected, it might be time to find relationships that allow you to thrive.
